Researchers have found that an acid that occurs naturally in the human body may be capable of preventing contact lenses from becoming dry.
The study performed by individuals at McMaster University shows that hyaluronic acid can be trapped in the materials used to make contact lenses. This acid prevents the lenses from becoming dried out. In addition, it also prevents the build up of proteins on the lenses. It has long been known that protein build up on lenses leads to eye infections and discomfort.
While many may balk at the idea of putting an acid that close to their eyes, researchers feel that doing so can be done in a way that is completely safe.
The body uses hyaluronic acid to repair skin, to provide resiliency in cartilage, and for the growth and movement of cells. It has other uses as well.
