Japan To Start Regulating Colored Lenses

August 6th, 2008 · No Comments

The Japanese government has decided to regulate the sale of non-prescription colored contact lenses in an effort to prevent serious eye damage. The decision comes after a report by the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) released a report concerning eye damage from contact lenses.

In a survey conducted by NITE, a minimum of 167 people’s eyes have been damaged by non-prescription contact lenses in the past 2.5 years.  While that may sound low, only 145 of roughly 13,000 opticians surveyed nationwide responded to the survey. 21 people were found to have damaged their eyes severely while there were 146 reported cases of minor damage due to wearing colored contact lenses.

A spokesman for NITE suggested the government should regulate the sale of non-prescription colored lenses in a way that is similar to corrective lenses. They want to make it a requirement that vendors of colored lenses explain, in full, the risks involved of wearing contacts.

The National Institute of Technology and Evaluation is an independent administrative body that evaluates consumer products.
