A new “smart” contact lens may be able to help doctors and patients alike monitor glaucoma. Researchers at the University of California - Davis have developed a contact lens with a built in pressure sensor.
Two students have developed a way of casting a polymer into a tiny device that can conduct electricity. In addition, it is capable of measuring how much it is stretched. The contact lens device they’ve created stretches based on the amount of pressure in the eye. The stretching, therefore, is a function of eye pressure. The eye pressure is one of the key components of glaucoma.
