FDA Eyes Stricter Rules for Contact Lens Solutions

June 9th, 2008 · No Comments

The FDA, in response to multiple recalls of contact lens solutions, is considering harsher testing requirements for contact lens solutions. The two recalls followed instances of hundreds of eye infections being treated by eye doctors everywhere.

The Food and Drug Administration outlined a number of proposals last Friday which are all aimed at improving the safety of contact lens solutions. Contact lenses are used by as many as 34 million Americans who all wear contact lenses.

In particular, the FDA is considering creating new testing standards for contact solutions as well as updated labeling. They are considering recommending that users gently rub their contact lenses during the cleaning process. This Tuesday, the agency will ask for the opinions of a panel of outside experts.

The CDC concluded in the summer of 2006 that Bausch and Lomb’s MoistureLoc solution was a key player in the outbreak of 180 Fusarium Keratitis fungal infections. This type of infection can cause blindness.

If you were diagnosed with a Fusarium Keratitis infection and have been affected negatively, please contact the contact solution recall lawyers of Williams Kherkher at 1-866-950-9000 to discuss your situation and to determine your legal options.
