University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine’s research teams have been awarded a $2.4 million grant to research corneal infections frequently associated with contact lens use.
The grant was awarded by the National Eye Institute and will be distributed over 5 years. The researchers will specifically study disease-causing fungi.
The main target of the investigation will be Fusarium solani. This fungus became a household name in 2005 and 2006 after it was named as the culprit behind an outbreak of corneal infections due to contact lenses in the United States.
The team will analyze the immune system’s response to Fusarium as well as other fungi. They will then work to identify the factors that fuel the infections.
If you experienced a corneal infection due to poorly developed contact lens solution, please contact the contact solution recall lawyers of Williams Kherkher at 1-866-950-9000 to discuss your case and to determine your legal options.
