$2.4 Million Grant to Research Fungal Eye Infections

March 21st, 2008 · No Comments

The National Eye Institute has granted Case Western Reserve University and the affiliated University Hospitals Case Medical Center a $2.4 million grant to research contact lenses and their effects on fungal eye infections.

Researchers will be focusing on the the Fusarium solani fungus and how it interacts with contact lens solutions. In 2005 and 2006, public attention was drawn to the issue after a rash of corneal infections were attributed to the failure of contact lens solutions to eliminate the fungus.

Advanced Medical Optics’ Complete Moisture Plus solution has been linked to the Acanthamoeba keratitis eye infection, a serious ailment which can lead to blindness.
