Researchers at the University of Washington report that they have successfully placed an electronic circuit and tiny LEDs on a flexible plastic lens. Although the LEDs on their prototype model do not yet light up, the potential of this technology is immense. It would allow the creation of a virtual “heads-up display” which only the wearer of the lens could see; in essence, a translucent image superimposed on the real world, giving benefits from extra information to virtual-reality entertainment.
The prototype lenses were tested on rabbits, without any discernible negative effects.
Despite new contact lens technology, consumers must still watch out for their own health.
