Contact Lens Solution Testing Using Old Fungus

February 11th, 2008 · No Comments

A recent study that was published has determined that current contact lens solutions are being tested against an out-dated, old strain of a common fungus.

The study, which was conducted by University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, claims that the corneal infections from 2006 that were tied to the ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution were fuelled by biofilms. In addition, the solution was made ineffective due to the same biofilms.

The strain of fungus that was used in the lab tests was obtained in 1970. It does not produce biofilms to protect itself from the contact lens solutions. This made ReNu’s solution effective in the laboratory but ineffective in real life. The solution wasn’t ineffective because of a failure on the part of the company during development so much as a failure of the company to recognize that funguses can evolve over time.

The lead doctor on the study recommends testing any and all new contact lens solution against more recently isolated fungi and bacterium.
