California Women Sue AMO

December 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

On behalf of three women who suffered eye damage and vision loss as the result of a severe eye infection, a lawsuit has been filed in California state court against Advanced Medical Optics (AMO). The lawsuit alleges that the three developed a severe form of eye infection known as Acanthamoeba kerataitis as a result of using Advanced Medical Optics’ Complete Moisture Plus contact lens solution.

The lawsuit alleges that AMO continued to sell and market AMO Complete Moisture Plus in spite of evidence that it could increase a patient’s risk of developing an Acanthamoeba keratitis infection.

In 2004, the first evidence of a link between AMO Complete Moisture Plus and Acanthamoeba keratitis was uncovered when doctors at a hospital in Illinois treated more than a dozen patients with this rare type of infection. Normally they would receive only one or two cases per year. After reporting this outbreak to the CDC, a preliminary investigation discovered that thirteen eye centers across the country had experienced a similar rise in Acanthamoeba keratitis cases since 2004.

The CDC determined that users of AMO Complete Moisture Plus were up to seven times more likely to develop the infection than other patients. As a result, Advanced Medical Optics was forced to issue a global recall for AMO Complete on May 25, 2007.
