Concerns raised in the United States early this year that AMO Complete All-in-One Moisture Plus contact lens solution was linked to “markedly increased risk” of developing Acanthamoeba keratis, a rare, painful and potentially blinding condition, sparked a recall of the contact lens solution in Canada last May.
Unfortunately, the recall came too late for some. CanWest News Service reported on November 12th that Donald Steven McKay, who started noticing problems in his left eye in April, is part of a class action suit against California-based Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. (AMO) and its Canadian subsidiary, AMO Canada, claiming that the company had a “reckless disregard for public safety”, delaying or denying the “incidence of AK infections so as to maintain profits.”
As a result of his eye condition, McKay was forced to take four months off from work and a myriad of medications. With a possible corneal transplant in his future, the damage AMO Complete All-in-One Moisture Plus and the resulting Acanthamoeba keratis has caused may be permanent.
