CDC Reports that Nine People Need Cornea Transplants

October 8th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Now that the news regarding the link between AMO, Inc.’s Complete Moisture PLUS contact lens solution and serious side effects has been established, stories regarding the fallout from use of this product are beginning to hit the wire.  The latest example appeared in The Gazette in Colorado.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that nine patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis — an eye infection linked to Complete MoisturePlus multi-purpose contact solution — need corneal transplants.

Advanced Medical Optics yanked Complete Moisture-Plus off shelves in May, after the CDC linked the solution to at least 21 cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis. The condition, which is caused by a parasite, can lead to blindness in severe cases.

Though the parasite is also found in tap water and other liquids — and the condition can be caused by activities like swimming, hot tubs, or improper handling of contacts — the CDC found that users of Complete Moisture-Plus increased their risk of infection by seven times.”

If you have used this product, please make sure to seek medical attention to make sure that you are not at risk for this disease.  If you have suffered as a result of using Complete Moisture PLUS, get in touch with a contact lens solution attorney at Williams Kherkher by calling us toll-free at (866) 950-9000.

I’ve used the AMO lens solution in the past. I saw the headlines of the dangers of this solution and that a recall has been issued. However, I did not have the symptoms of an eye infection. Why has AMO contact lens solution been recalled?
