According to a new study conducted by a group of Israeli researchers, contact lens cases are frequently contaminated.
The study examined the contact lens cases of 16 different people. This gave them 30 different cases to examine. In nearly two-thirds of the cases, the research team found a minimum of one pathogen.
The pathogens were found in all of the storage solutions examined in the study. Some of the solutions involved tested positive for pathogens repeatedly. These pathogens can cause painful inflammation of the cornea. Complications are capable of permanently affecting vision.
The researchers’ findings were presented at a recent joint meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the European Society of Ophthalmology. The researchers, in conjunction with their findings, urge all contact lens users to adhere to the lens care guidelines closely. This includes frequent cleaning and replacing of lens cases.

A new study shows that prolonged exposure to high temperatures degrades the antifungal properties of ReNu with Moisture Loc contact lens solution.
The new study, which compared ReNu with five other companies’ contact lens solution, stored two bottles of each solution at room temperature and two bottles at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Of the 6 bottles, there was a decline in the antifungal abilities of all of those stored at a higher temperature. ReNu showed the most decline in its ability to fight off microbes.
Between 2004 and 2006, there was an outbreak of acanthamoeba keratitis that was attributed to ReNu’s contact lens solution. The company was cited by the FDA for inadequate temperature control in production, storage, and shipping.
The study was published in the November issue of the Archives of Ophthamology.

A newly designed contact lens cases beeps when it is time to change the lenses. This is seen as an innovative approach to taking away a person’s ability to forget to change the lenses.
The cases, sold by Switched, have different colored ends. They are equipped with a battery-operated timer that canbe set to either a 14 day or 30 day countdown. When the time has run out, the case beeps like an alarm clock. The cases are available in packs of 4 for $35. They come with batteries that are designed to last three months.
With new studies having shown that contact lens cases are in danger of contamination, the limited battery life may be a sign to change the case when the batteries die.

Eye doctors everywhere are warning people who want to change their eye color for Halloween about the risks associated with contact lenses that are not fitted correctly.
One doctor has urged individuals to ensure that their lenses are fit by an eye doctor. The lenses, despite being made of similar materials of normal lenses, are typically larger than ordinary lenses. This means they cover more of a person’s eye and so allow even less oxygen to reach the eye. This increases the chances and the speed of irritation and ulceration.
These two items can result in permanent eye damage or even blindness. For people who insist on wearing non-prescription decorative lenses, it is recommended that they be worn only for a few hours as a maximum.

Always popular around Halloween, cosmetic contact lenses pose a significant risk of eye infection to revelers everywhere.
Federal laws require that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulate cosmetic or decorative lenses like they regulate medical devices. The FDA tries to regulate cosmetic lenses in a way similar to corrective lenses. Unfortunately, decorative lenses are still sold and marketed illegally through a variety of sources. These include flea markets, the internet, beauty salons, and convenience stores.
According to the AOA, only an eye doctor can determine whether or not patients should be using contact lenses. This is done through an eye exam. This eye exam is designed to determine if a person is capable of wearing contact lenses without problems. The exam is also important to ensure that the lenses fit properly.
An eye doctor will also be able to show a person how to care for his or her lenses in a way that will reduce the risk of eye infections.
