Two different studies published in the American Academy of Ophthamology’s publication Ophthamology both identify buying contact lenses online as a risk factor for contact lens related eye infections.
Findings in the first study found that individuals who buy their lenses online are 4.76 times more likely to have problems with their eyes following contact lens use than individuals who do not buy their lenses online. In addition, it is suggested that those who buy their lenses online will also be less likely to follow good eye care practices resulting in a further increase in the risk of eye infections.
The second study found that the risk of eye infections was greater in people who wore Dailies by CIBA Vision and Soflens One Day by Bausch & Lomb. A third group of daily disposable lenses was also named.

The Food and Drug Administration has reformatted its nonapproval letter in order to avoid scaring investors. The new letters will be a “complete response” which are intended to be more neutral than a rejection letter.
With the former approvable and non-aprrovable letters, analysts were left very minimal information on the opinion of the FDA. The new letters will tell weaknesses of the product and could offer some advice for improvements.

The FDA is focusing on contact lens safety, including changing safety recommendations. They’re also planning on releasing information for how consumers can avoid dangerous eye infections.
According to the FDA, it is possible to get nasty eye infections if the rules aren’t followed. According to eye doctors, it doesn’t take much to create a problem. Germs can build up on lenses and in the eye when users leave their lenses in too long, handle them improperly, or try to stretch cleaning solution by adding new solution to old, used solution.
In an effort to ensure contact lens solutions are safe, the FDA is considering strengthening its standards for product testing. They’re looking at safety standards due to the trend in recent years of eye infection outbreaks.

The FDA is now urging people to clean their contact lenses and looking into stronger testing requirements for new solutions before they go on the market.
Last week, a panel of experts met to discuss precautions that could be taken by contact lens wearers to minimize their chances of infection. The precautions include not re-using solution, cleaning the lenses, not sleeping with lenses in, and removing the lenses before going swimming or using a hot tub.
The experts are also suggesting the FDA develop more stringent rules and standards for new contact lens solutions. This meeting took place nearly two years after a recall was originally issued.

The Food and Drug Administration outlined a number of proposals last Friday which are all aimed at improving the safety of contact lens solutions. Contact lenses are used by as many as 34 million Americans who all wear contact lenses.
In particular, the FDA is considering creating new testing standards for contact solutions as well as updated labeling. They are considering recommending that users gently rub their contact lenses during the cleaning process. This Tuesday, the agency will ask for the opinions of a panel of outside experts.
The CDC concluded in the summer of 2006 that Bausch and Lomb’s MoistureLoc solution was a key player in the outbreak of 180 Fusarium Keratitis fungal infections. This type of infection can cause blindness.
